This is the Apple official iPhone silicon case, and compared to the alternatives, it’s pretty pricey. So, is it worth it? Let’s talk about it. This article is going to be divided into three segments: overview, general user experience, and my personal remarks.
Overview
The Apple official iPhone silicon case is a $50 slim case that both protects the phone and preserves its MagSafe functionality, meaning you can wirelessly charge the device and or attach it magnetically to your accessories, no problem.
The case is very thin. It adds only just a tiny bit of extra thickness, which we’ll discuss its protection in a moment. But in regards to its sizing, you really won’t need to worry about fitting it into your pockets, your bag, your purse, etc. No issues.
Taking a look at the case itself, it has a small lip that goes over your phone, so you can place your device on the table, screen first, with no worries about damaging the front. The iPhone cameras even have their own version of that lip for some added protection on those premium lenses. However, just like an iPhone without a case, the device is still not level with the silicon case when set down on its back. So, it can wobble just like usual, which isn’t great, but it’s consistent with the current iPhone’s design and thickness.
Structural Composition
As you can see in this little bite coming off of my case, the Apple silicon case consists of multiple layers.
-
First, you have the grippy silicon outer shell.
-
Then, you have the protective plastic inner layer.
-
And finally, you have the inner microfiber lining that your phone sits in.
Do note that within the interior is a very simple premium microfiber shell that doesn’t leave any marks on your phone. But unlike other cases, this one doesn’t have any added protection within, such as spongy portions of the shell that make it more protective. It doesn’t have that.
General User Experience
So, in regard to the protection, how well does this case actually perform? Well, for many folks, pretty well. To prepare for this review, I read and researched many people’s opinions on the case, and this is what I found. From what I’ve seen online, there seems to be an interesting divide between people either absolutely loving the case or outright avoiding it.
The most common acclaim for the Apple silicon case is how nice it feels in the hands. It’s grippy, relatively soft, and very tough to slip out. So, in regard to comfort and usability, the iPhone silicon case is great, but the most common complaint from what I’ve seen is that its durability and protection are only okay.
Regarding durability, the case will slowly chip away at itself because of that softer silicon that can also attract some dust, plus stick to your pants. And in regard to protection, though this is a slim case, there’s still room for improvement, such as adding more of a lip over your phone screen for just that added protection. Many people question its durability online and don’t know whether the case is worth the cost.
Personal Remarks
For me, I’m pretty satisfied with it. This is my iPhone, and there are no cracks on the frame, scratches, nothing except on the screen. We’ll discuss that momentarily.
Now, I am someone who takes, I’d say, pretty good care of my phone, but I’m still human. I’ve dropped my phone quite a few times outside, in the car, when leaving the car, just on the floor, everywhere. I don’t have clips of those situations, but believe me, they do happen from time to time, and my phone is perfectly fine. No issues with it.
But the case definitely has seen better days. Yeah, it chips away, and this is a common reality for the Apple silicon case. Now, I have had it for a long while, so it’s expected to have some wear and tear. This isn’t anything crazy or unusual for the case, but do note that, yeah, it’s not as pristine as it used to be, and most Apple silicon cases won’t be after a while.
Performance and Final Verdict
This isn’t really a knock on the case, but I want to note that at one point when I dropped my phone, the screen protector did crack, which again, I think any silicon case would likely yield the same result. But shock absorption won’t be perfect on this case. Though, no thin case will really be as good as any monster massive industrial case that guarantees your phone won’t break even if you drop a hammer on it.
So, for me, I’d say this case has handled everything well. Honestly, even better than what I expected because when I purchased my case, the employee actually tried to get me to not buy it and instead get something more protective, meaning that he didn’t trust the case’s ability. But from what I’ve seen, almost 2 years later, it works well.
Is it expensive for a silicon case? Yes. So, if that doesn’t match your budget, there are many other competitive options. But I’d say definitely give it a look and a try if you find this sort of thin, grippy, and fairly protective case interesting. Just be sure to be mindful of your budget and needs and go for what you want.
